Brit in island ‘drug rape’ case returns to Thailand to give evidence

From Andrew Drummond, Bangkok, December 10

A Briton, who fled Thailand with his girlfriend after they believe they were seriously sexually abused after being drugged on a holiday island, has returned to complete his evidence for Thai police.

Police in Koh Chang, 250 miles south east of Bangkok, said today they had now taken a statement from the man, known only as Richard, over claims that the couple from London had both been raped at their holiday bungalow on the island at the end of a world tour.

The couple, the man, a company director, 42, the woman, known as Susan, 31, fled with the bedding from their guest house, believing the Thai  Police were not taking their allegations seriously.

Both have been interviewed by officers from a Scotland Yard ‘Project Sapphire’ team based in Kingston, and have been treated and tested at ‘The Haven’  at the Royal London Hospital.

“I am absolutely confident that Scotland Yard will be able to confirm that we were drugged and that they will be able to get DNA profiles of our attackers,” said Richard in Bangkok today.

The couple claimed they were drinking and listening to music at their holiday apartment on the Thai island of Koh Chang in the early morning on November 19th with an English woman and her three French friends, when they collapsed.

The man claimed he awoke briefly to find his face being forced against their bungalow window to see his partner being raped inside.  Later the same morning he awoke again to see the group leave and boast about what they had done.  Before they complained to police they consulted a local doctor who told them they were showing the symptoms of having been drugged with a ‘date rape’ type drug, possibly Dormicon.

Dr. Roongtham Charentantanakul , who counseled said afterwards: “These cases are very difficult to deal with.  These drugs have two main affects, one is hypnotic and the other is retrograde amnesia.  That means the victims can fully co-operate with their attackers and then afterwards forget all about it or only have partial recall”.

Although ‘Susan’, 31, gave a statement, the couple decided to flee Thailand, they said, when a Thai British Consular official advised them to leave, and police refused to collect DNA evidence from their room.

Scotland Yard have confirmed they have taken samples from the couple and their bedding and also done video interviews. The matter would be handed over to SOCA – the Serious Organised Crime Agency, who have a representative at the British Embassy in Bangkok, to pass on to Royal Thai Police, Region 2.

British woman ‘raped’ in Thai beach resort

British woman raped in Thailand – two men held

Link to Daily Mail

From Andrew Drummond, Bangkok, Monday November 17

A British tourist claimed last night that she was dragged off the street by two men in front of Thai police and then taken to a hotel where she was raped and then robbed of her belongings.

The woman, aged 25, said the attack happened early Saturday morning in the Thai resort of Pattaya, twenty metres from a police box. The attack happened after she had been separated from friends. The abduction allegedly took place in Pattaya’s Walking Street.

She said she was unable to resist the two men who after raping her then left taking her Natwest bank and credit cards and 60 pounds in cash and a bracelet worth 100 pounds. Nobody came to her help.

The attack was kept secret at her request but last night police in Pattaya charged two men with rape and theft. They were named as Krajon Senkam, 29, and Surasak Kovekasan, 20, who were described as local ‘maeng da’ – a Thai expression , literally translating as cockroaches, describing men who live off the earnings of local prostitutes.

Police Colonel Wanlop Kangtharatit said the men were arrested quickly as they were known in the area.

Briton arrested for raping Swedish woman on Thai holiday isle

From Andrew Drummond, Bangkok

Tuesday 3rd July 2007

A 27-year-old British tourist has been arrested and charged with the rape of a Swedish woman on a Thai holiday island.

Benjamin Gardner, from Newport, Wales was apprehended today (Tuesday) by police in Pattaya, Eastern Thailand after an Interpol arrest warrant was issued to Thailand’s National Police headquarters.

He is alleged to have raped the woman at a deserted house on Ko Pha-Ngan Island in Southern Thailand in February this year. The island is famous for its Full Moon Party, which attract thousands of European backpackers every month.

After his arrest at the run down P.R. Guesthouse in Pattaya, about 100 miles east of Bangkok, Gardner told police that he had lost his passport in February and claimed somebody else must have assumed his identity in Ko Pha-Ngan.

Gardner’s whereabouts eventually came to Interpol’s attention after he was arrested by Thai police in Pattaya in May and charged with criminal assault on a Thai woman.

He had allegedly promised to pay the woman £7.00 sterling for sex but had stolen her money and a gold necklace while she took a shower. Police later found him hiding in a toilet at the hotel.

He spent two weeks in Pattaya jail before posting £800 sterling for bail last month. Today he was re-arrested, charged with rape and will be escorted by police to Ko Pha-Ngan tomorrow.

Murder Comes to a holiday idyll

Katherine Horton was killed after taking a stroll on a beach in Thailand
By Andrew Drummond and Sophie Kirkham

A BRITISH student was murdered after she went for a stroll along a tropical beach in Thailand to make a mobile phone call.Murder comes to holiday idyll

Katherine Horton, 21, a psychology student from Cardiff, was travelling with a friend from Reading University and had been on the resort island of Koh Samui for only a few days.

It is thought that Miss Horton was attacked after leaving her friend and walking alone along the white sand beach to chat in private, possibly to her mother in Cardiff, on Sunday evening.

Her body was found the next morning in shallow water off Lamai beach by jetski operators. Local news reports said that she had been raped.

Speaking from Thornhill, Cardiff, her mother, Elizabeth, said yesterday that her daughter had already called home once to wish her family a happy new year: “That was the last we heard of her. She sounded so happy out there.”

Miss Horton was with Ruth Adams, also 21, on a two-week backpacking holiday. They met up with friends, one of whom rang Miss Horton’s parents yesterday to break the news. The pair had flown out on December 27 and were staying at the £10-a-night New Hut Bungalow resort on New Year’s Eve. Staff said they had seen the two women together on Sunday night outside their bungalow, and had found out that Miss Horton had been killed only when police arrived.

Miss Adams, who is said to be inconsolable, was last night still helping the authorities. She told police that they had been sitting on the beach in front of the bungalows at 9pm when Miss Horton received a call from her family on her mobile. She then strolled along the beach as she spoke to her relatives while Miss Adams returned to their bungalow and fell asleep. It was not until the next morning that she realised Miss Horton was missing.

Her body was found a short while later. One witness said there were signs of severe injuries to her head and shoulder. Local television footage showed her body slumped on the beach wearing a dark green T-shirt. She appeared to have bruising on her left shoulder.

“I can’t believe she’s gone. It just doesn’t seem real, it doesn’t seem possible,” her mother said last night. “They were really looking forward to [the holiday] and were very excited. But nobody seems to be able to tell me how she has died or what has happened to her. I just want to know what happened to my little girl. They were just going to travel around backpacking before coming home to carry on with their studies. She was such a lovely girl.”

Miss Horton, who had been due home on January 10, had two older brothers.

Her father, Richard, who also lives in Cardiff, was said to be devastated.

Koh Samui is popular with backpackers, families and budget travellers, and is known for its nightlife and beach parties, often held under a full moon. In recent years there have been reports of rise in crime in the southeastern Thai island, with the appearance of local gangs. Women travellers have complained of being harassed.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office says it had received reports of sex attacks on men and women and advises: “Female travellers in particular should maintain a high state of personal awareness in Thailand.”
